Mayo’s has so much to offer walking enthusiasts from its largely unspoilt, clean countryside, varying landscapes, unique scenery and rich heritage and folklore mark it as the ideal walking destination. Mayo offers all kinds of walking trails including Mountain, Coastal and Island, Rural and Urban Greenways and National Loop Trails. The variety on offer is endless.

Burrishoole Loops

The Burrishoole Loop Walks are located in west Mayo and includes the areas of Newport, Derrada, Tiernaur & Mulranny. Each of the four areas have a serious of approved walking trails ranging in distance from 3km to 16km.

Mulranny

The Walking Trails in Mulranny offers panoramic views of both Bellacragher & Clew Bay, Wild Nephin National Park, the Islands and Croagh Patrick. The trials incorporate Mulranny Blue Flag Beach, the causeway, country tracks, a short section of boardwalk, woodland, open mountain and a section of the Great Western Greenway.

The official start to the walk is located at Mulranny Beach.

Newport

The trails located in Newport incorporates the town, they also take in a series of country lanes, and a short section of the Great Western Greenway. The trails offers panoramic views of Clew Bay with Croagh Patrick as a backdrop to the south and the Nephin Beg mountain range to the north.

The official start to the walk is located at a car park opposite Nevins Bar & Restaurant at Newfield, Tiernaur. It is located approximately 3km from Mulranny village on the N59 Mulranny to Newport road.

Derrada

The trails located in Derrada traverses a number of country lanes / tracks, sections of stony paths and a short section of the Great Western Greenway. The trail offers magnificent coastal landscapes with panoramic views of Clew Bay, the Islands and Croagh Patrick.

The official start to the trails is located at a car park at Derrada Community Centre. To get to the start, from Newport town, Follow the N59 in the direction of Mulranny for approximately 5km to reach a road junction on your right (signposted Derrada Community Centre). Turn right and follow this road for approximately 500 meters until you arrive at Derrada Community Centre.

Tiernaur

The trails located in Tiernaur traverses a series of bog tracks, country lanes and a short section of the Great Western Greenway. The walks offer panoramic views of Clew Bay with Croagh Patrick as a backdrop to the south and the Nephin Beg mountain range to the north.

The official start to the walk is located at a car park opposite Nevins Bar & Restaurant at Newfield, Tiernaur. It is located approximately 3km from Mulranny village on the N59 Mulranny to Newport road.
